Acne

Aetiology

Acne is an inflammatory illness that affects the intracutaneo-sebaceous follicle system. It is triggered by an increased level of grease and an obstruction of the follicle that facilitates the proliferation of bacteria P. acnes, which causes the inflammatory process. Acne is the most common skin condition; it is estimated that over 85% of the population have suffered from it at some time between 12 and 25 years of age. It is thought that about 20 % of people affected by it need treatment.

Treatment

There are different types of acne: serious, moderate, and mild, and each one requires specific treatment. This can range from orally administered treatments that reduce the production of grease to skin surface treatments with keratolytic and/or anti-infective treatments that help to ‘unblock’ the follicle. Extra care is also recommended for acneic skin with suitable protection and hygiene products.
